What is Baseball5?
Perhaps you’ve heard the buzz, seen a video, or are just curious about this dynamic new sport. In essence, Baseball5 is a highly accessible, street-friendly version of baseball and softball, designed to be played anywhere, by anyone, with minimal equipment.
Forget the bats, gloves, and specialized fields – Baseball5 strips the game down to its core, focusing on athleticism, strategy, and pure fun. It’s quickly gaining popularity worldwide as a fantastic way to enjoy the spirit of bat-and-ball sports in an urban environment.
The Basics: How Does it Work?
At its heart, Baseball5 mirrors many of the fundamental concepts of traditional baseball and softball, but with some clever adaptations to make it incredibly versatile:
No Bat, No Glove!
This is one of the most distinguishing features. Players “bat” by hitting a specialized, high-density rubber ball with their bare hand. Fielders also catch the ball with their bare hands. This makes the game incredibly safe and eliminates the need for expensive equipment.
The Ball
A specially designed rubber ball (often a WBSC Baseball5 ball) is used. It’s soft enough to be hit and caught barehanded, yet durable and provides a good bounce
The Field
Baseball5 can be played almost anywhere! All you need is a square playing area of 21×21 meters. Bases are marked, but there are no pitching mounds or complex infields. A hard, flat surface like a basketball court, tennis court, or even a street or park area works perfectly.
Five Innings
A typical game of Baseball5 consists of five innings, making it a much quicker game than traditional baseball or softball. This quick pace adds to its appeal for casual play and tournaments alike.
Players and Teams: Small, Agile, and Equal
Baseball5 emphasizes agility, teamwork, and inclusivity

Each team fields five players. This small roster makes it easy to gather a group and get a game going.

A key rule in Baseball5 is that competitive teams must be mixed-gender, with a minimum of two female and two male players on the field at all times (or vice-versa). This commitment to gender equality is a core principle of the sport.

With Baseball5 being so faced paced, and only 5 players on a team, team work is essential for winning consistently.
Simplified Rules, Exciting Play
Hitting
The batter hits the ball with their open hand. The ball must travel into fair territory within the 21×21 meter playing area
Running Bases
Just like in baseball, once the ball is hit, the batter becomes a runner and attempts to advance around the bases (first, second, third, home) to score a run
Outs
Fielders aim to get three outs per inning. Common ways to get an out include: Catching a batted ball before it hits the ground. Tagging a runner with the ball. Forcing a runner out at a base
Scoring
A run is scored when a player legally touches all bases and crosses home plate
No Pitcher
Since there’s no bat, there’s no pitcher! The batter initiates the play by hitting the ball themselves.
